  1. Great low budget garage build. I recently picked up a 02 Legacy Wagon with about 230,000 miles on it. The kid before me pulled the engines and had the heads gone through and put it back together, I wish he had done as much as you did with your engine. I bet you get at least a couple years out of it, 20-30 thousand miles? Maybe longer, who knows. My only concern honestly is that you reused the head bolts, it is my understanding that these use 'TTY' or Torque To Yield head bolts. What this means is they are designed to stretch into elasticity to allow the bolt to stretch with the expansion and contraction of the heads during continued heating and cooling cycles. Due to this they are a one use only bolt, once they have been stretched, that's it, they are done. But if you torqued them down via the proper spec and sequence and none of them felt like they went mushy on you then chances are they will go just fine. But there is also a good chance they will just stretch out and not return and you will end up with blown head gaskets, but hey ballin on a budget. I appreciate your thread, as someone new to these engines it is great to be able to see all the parts in detail in both tear down and reassembly.   2. So the struts and most all the suspension on my 02 Legacy L model Wagon are completely shot to the point where it really is starting to get to be unsafe. I just bought the car and am looking for affordable ways to get the job done. I am not looking to lower the car or make it handle like a race car, I would like to at least get it back to factory performance if not a little better. I have seen lots of wrx and sti guys selling off there factory strut setups for cheap after upgrading but I am not sure of what years and models of Subaru's will interchange with my 02' Wagon? I wouldn't mind if the suspension gets a little stiffer or lower, or for that matter a little higher. I mostly want to use the car for utility, camping, adventuring etc.. Been around a few road race course's in my day but this is certainly not the car for that, but ya know I still like to drive and it is a 5 speed Anyways I am new to the Subaru world so I need some experienced folks on the forums to guide me in the right direction...   3. Yes, its what I want to do, as a matter of fact I want it to show MORE mileage then it is currently. Back story is I just bought a 02 Legacy Wagon that showed 135,000 on the ode, although the car is totally worn out. Did a car fax and my suspicions where true. 07/25/2019 the mileage was 231,421 09/21/2019 the mileage went to 128,010 Went in to Joes Gas and Smog for a emissions test and came out a 100,000 miles younger, Anyways it is not fair to me or to a future owner to have a misrepresented mileage so I would like to correct it. I can easily correct it via the DMV paperwork but I also want the odo to reflect the true mileage. Not sure if someone just swapped in a different cluster or if they took the speed sensor out of the trans and turned it backwards with a drill motor? is that possible. Anyways that's my question for the day. Thanks,
  4. So I just recently purchased a 02 Legacy wagon and it has a sloppy shifter, and leaking rear seals. Sounds like a great project to get started with on the car. So I am getting a little confused on the shift knuckle, Should I buy the entire knuckle complete, or should I buy the individual bushings and rebuild the knuckle? It looks like there was 2 styles, one was fully rebuildable and the later one like mine has a permanently pressed pin and bushing arrangement. I was thinking the pin could be ground down and pressed out and new bushings and bolt and nut back together, essentially back dating it to the older style. Anyone ever do this or familiar with it? The entire knuckle appears to be about $75 from the dealer, or I could buy all the knuckle bushings and bolt/nuts to convert for about $25, more work, but much less expensive. I seen rock auto has a energy suspension polyurethane shift bushing kit for about $20 which seems like a great price, these are the bushings for the actual shift arm bracket. One where it attaches to the body and the round doughnut one at the transmission. Any other parts, tips/tricks, as I get started on this project. Thanks
  5. Alright so I have done a little research and it looks like the shifter seal is behind the extension housing cover. That kinda sucks, looks like I will also be replacing the output seal as well. So anyone got any write ups/advice on pulling the extension cover without removing the transmission? Thanks Again

Hello Everyone, First Post, YAY I just purchased a 02' Legacy Wagon w/ 5sp a couple days ago and after getting it up on the lift and inspecting things I noticed its got a pretty good leak from the shift shaft seal. I picked up a new one from the local dealer for $10 and am looking forward to digging in for the first dirty job on the old girl. I am familiar with the shift shaft seals on the old BMW's so not totally going in blind but the Subaru has a different setup so was hoping for some insight, perhaps a DIY write up. While I am in there I would also hope to tighten up the shifter action, its pretty sloppy. Thanks Everyone Robert
