How to Remove the LGT Chip

Recommended Posts

I was never a big fan of our LGT key (as you will soon see) and prefer to use the STI key... I used to hold the two together, slide the sti key into the ignition and turn, but that is too much of a hassle. Below is how to remove the chip from your stock key.

Before:

After:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21424&stc=1&d=1153330826

Tools Used:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21422&stc=1&d=1153330826

This is what I started with. A double toothed saw.

For more precise cutting, I moved on to a finely serrated blade

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21432&stc=1&d=1153330826

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21432&stc=1&d=1153330826

Start by making a large grove near the top of the head of the key

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21431&stc=1&d=1153330826

It took me a while to bring myself to saw through that emblem.

The most important thing is to know EXACTLY WHERE YOUR CHIP IS in the key. Refer to this picture, and note this is the side WITH the emblem:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21421&stc=1&d=1153330826

This is the side WITHOUT the emblem:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21418&stc=1&d=1153330826

Finish the cut all the way around, and then begin a diagnol slide along the metal of the key, around the chip so that you may eventually slide it loose. (refer to the "After picture")

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21427&stc=1&d=1153330826

Once you have done this, you can slide out a chunk of rubber that houses the chip:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21428&stc=1&d=1153330826

Other side:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21429&stc=1&d=1153330826

The chip itself is in a little box-like housing inside this rubber chunk.

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21419&stc=1&d=1153330826

When fully removed/surgeoned, the chip is about the size of a dime:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21426&stc=1&d=1153330826

Here it is:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21416&stc=1&d=1153330826

And again

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21417&stc=1&d=1153330826

here it is next to the sti key

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21425&stc=1&d=1153330826

This is the setup I used to chisel away until the end:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21420&stc=1&d=1153330826

This takes patience and careful cutting skills. I recommend using a pliers and fine serrated knife the entire time (and maybe thick gloves).

With the chip out, I placed it inside the ignition circle (right under the key insert) and put in my non-chipped sti key. Bingo, car started!

I might try to implant this chip in the STI key. Or adhere it to the steering column area. Or you could make a ring out of it, or whatever you want.

Note. Be careful trying to start the car with the chip too far away from the key insert. Your car alarm may go off.

Enjoy!

wow...

Are you a friend of Hogmeat's???

Pretty hardcore mod. You might not want to attach the chip to the column, as it makes it much easier for someone to steal the car without your key.

Why not just buy a 2005-2006 STi key and still have a chip without making it easier for someone to steal your car? :icon_conf

Man this is hilarious. I don't even like the look of the STi key... but mad props for an interesting mod.

Why in the heck would you want to hold the LGT key next to the STI key just to start the car? Its a key. It starts the car. Why would you carry 2 around just for that.

I love the tools used too. A leatherman tool and a kitchen knife. Hilarious.

haha thanks heights

no im not

well its not so much just for the sti key...

with the chip movable like this it means that i will never have to pay the steep price for a chipped key again (and the $100+ for the dealership to reset the car/keys), and can make as many copies as i want

(PS no I didn't know the new sti key was chipped, but nonetheless, I would rather take the cheaper approach that is infinitely more flexible)

I probably won't keep it in the car.

I slapped on some velcro just to try it out:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21451&stc=1&d=1153339966

(I actually moved the velcro a little bit while i was in the car, so those pics arent accurate)

hahahaha gross

going for a theme here

(of blue)

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21455&stc=1&d=1153339966

And when the key is turned:

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21452&stc=1&d=1153339966

http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=21453&stc=1&d=1153339966

uh yeah so basically now we know that the chip will work to turn on the car that way,

but if the chip is sideways the wrong way (with writing facing away from the ignition column) the car will not start

verrrry touchy sensor for the chip.

This is t3h dumbest mod ever. He scores high on being unique and good with tools but the idea behind it is as dumb as it gets.

It's a key. It is big and the remote control is even bigger. But ultimately it is a smart key and should be kept as such.

lol

idea behind it = i needed another key for my bro, now i can make one for $1 at home depot instead of $180 for dealership/key blank fees

Holy F*KING SH*T! Dude, do you use an ax for a fly swatter?

I guess I just don't get it...

Its your car and keys, do with it what you will.

Be well, and stay away from the kitchen knives, buy a Dremel.

A few things...

This is one of the better done write-ups I have looked at...spacing, spelling, pictures, explanation, coherency, etc. Maybe he should hire out to those of you with third grade English skills.

I happen to like the STi key better than what we have. I would prefer an unchipped key since I hate the extra weight and volume in the pants pocket.

He got the job done with the tools he had. Maybe it was a Ginsu knife...don't you guys watch late night TV...they will cut through anything and mom will never know you even used it. Plus, he didn't make a trip to the ER for stitches (or at least he didn't tell us).

Flame away bishes. :icon_bigg

It is still ugly.
