Seat raise for thigh support

Recommended Posts

I had complained earlier about the lack of thigh support in a non-limited GT.

These first few pics show the steel front support beam of the seat that I removed and welded in a 1.5 inch extension. I later found this to be too much and removed 5/8 inch form the beam. I essentially ended up with a 7/8 inch extension or raise of the seat.

Of course it is not that simple.

I had to re-route the wires going to the side airbag so they would not interfere with the seat (for-aft) movement.

The next pics show the wire that had to be re-routed and the plastic trim pieces that had to be cut to allow for the seat to move unhindered.

Sorry for the shortness of this thread, too busy lately, but I told some people I would post soon.

Feel free to ask questions and I will try to answer any and explain in further detail as required.

Very cool. Looking at the car normally, could you ever tell it had been modified?

Any chance you'll do a more comprehensive write up or walkthrough later when you have a little more time. I think this might just be the thing for me. And I think the boys in the shop out back just might be willing to help me out!

You cannot tell anything is really different in the car.

It is really as if you have the power seats and the front of the seat is as high as it will go and the back of the seat is as low as it will go.

It really makes a huge difference while driving long distances.

This pic shows the area where the welder cut and inserted more steel.

Notice how much larger the piece looks then stock. I took the pic when the welder had inserted a 1.5 inch piece (too high), I never took a pic when he changed it to only being raised 7/8 of an inch, but you should get the idea.

I would recommend adding anywhere from 1/2 to 1 inch to that bar (depending on your needs). Any less and I wouldn't imagine it would be worth it, any more and it will be too high. When I had it 1.5 inches high my wife had to put the seat soo close to the steering wheel that her knees hit the underside of the dash, now it works good for her too.

BTW all of the mods I did to the plastic trim pieces were done at the 1.5 inch mark. I had to cut a lot of plastic so that it would not rub on the seat track when the seat was slid back and forth. I am sure with less of a raise less plastic would have to be cut. Just make sure you put the seat through all of its movements and double check everything before bolting it back into the car.

Also, I don't think it was the SRS wire that I had to move. I am pretty sure it was the heater wire for the back of the seat. It rubbed the seat track when it moved back and forth.

  • 4 weeks later...

One part of this 6'4" Azn wishes he saw your mod before he bought his LGT, the other part is glad he didn't.

I'm loving the huge-ass sunroof. I think the 8-way 'lectric seats give me the adjustability I need.
